TILESET and BGs - Mario Inspired
Here is, nearly a complete tileset and background collection in the style of Super Mario / All - Stars. This is a repost, with additions from my way earlier post of these. These tiles are 32x32. They are 6 tiles wide. Also, I've included a ZIP file with all the stuff here in it, PLUS several NIGHT time versions of various bg's. Please feel free to add comments or what have you about these.

Anyone may use these for whatever you like, even if it's not a Mario style game. These could be used for other projects too, you'll just have to choose an appropriate set. I've included some levels giving an idea of how these can be used. Please never mind the tweaky collisions and such. These are just examples and each level still plays.

RE: TILESET and BGs - Mario Inspired
Hello there,

I found this forum (and your website) yesterday, when I was searching on Google for tilesets for platform games. I was just amazed by the very nice graphics you've made. Smile

I am not a Game Maker or a RPG Maker user. Instead, I am a programmer who uses C++ / SDL for game development. The tilesets you published can be very helpful, especially because they are original, so it's possible to use them on a non-mario fangame too without licensing concerns.

I'm currently making a game that will be released as freeware, and perhaps open source. I'd like to use your graphics in my game, but with some modifications. These tilesets are 32x32, but my game engine works with 24x24. For example, I need to resize some of your graphics to fit the engine.

I'm also using the Spritelib GPL in the game. Your tilesets fit very well with those sprites. I made a test level with random stuff in it, and the result is very nice:

[Image: screen1fz9.th.png] [Image: screen2pu4.th.png]
[Image: screen3ql6.th.png] [Image: screen5hv0.th.png]

So I'd like to know if I can modify your tilesets a little bit.
Thanks!

Hey Alexandre! It's nice to see someone will use my tilesets. I'm familiar with the SpriteLIB GPL. I wouldn't mind, but I would like to ask:

Do you need just the tileset you have referenced, or all/most of them?

I'd be willing to fix them for you to fit a 24x24 world. Although, you can edit them yourself too. I'm pretty good with making clean resizes for things. I've noticed the tileset you resized for example, is a bit filtered.

If you will edit them yourself, try and add a single level SHARPEN to them that way they look cleaner, and more like they were designed that way originally. I just tested that with Paint Shop Pro and the results are in the image below. It takes extra time to manually re-draw them so i understand how just resizing them saves time considerably.

Here is the example :

So, let me know, and all should be well. Thanks for your interest! Smile

It's nice to get to know a regular programmer too, considering the fact that with regular programming, you can make EXACTLY what you want. I use Game Maker and RPG Maker because I am an artists/semi-decent designer mostly, and a lot of coding confuses me. I'm not too well at drawing character sprites like heroes, animals, people, monsters etc, but am practicing. My best traits are structural design, (BG's, tilesets, Objects etc..) Smile

PS:
If you want, keep me updated on your game, and if you may need some other graphics, and I can accommodate, I'll be happy to.

Thanks for your reply!

I plan to use most of the tilesets you've published, except the ones that are very Mario-specific (i.e., the pipes PNGs). As you've noticed, the modified image I posted was a bit filtered (because it was just resized on GIMP, hahah). The resized tileset you've posted is certainly better, thank you. :-)

I resized the Cocoa Tileset on GIMP and then applied the sharpen effect (40). What do you think?

As for my game, I started working on it on January, 2008. I hope to be able to release a playable demo (for both Linux and Windows) sometime (near the end of) this year. Lots of stuff have been done already, but there are much more things to do yet. In this sense, there won't be any releases in the next few months. I'm working to get something done by the end of 2008.

Even without a playable demo at this time, it would be nice to hear your opinion about the game (some ideas, pictures, etc). Right now, the project is on an initial stage of development, but its core engine, which involves some heavy programming and is the base of all the game code, is already done.

Hey, that's cool. The resize you did there looks better. I could offer some ideas, but would need to know exactly what type platformer style you are going to produce. I can see from the screens that you will probably use a top screen health meter? I can make you a custom one if you wish. Also any HUD type gfx you may need I could help.

The anger bar is there for a special ability I presume? Another idea I've had for a GM game I've wanted to do is, be able to enter doors with simple shops to upgrade health and that sort of stuff. If, of course, you've included something like that in your engine.

I've sent you a PM with a HUD I made for a GM game, but that one prolly isn't in the style of this platformer, but more closely to the hud for Ghouls and Ghosts. (Just don't let no one else get them) Thanks. That's just an example of some stuff I can do for a hud and sub-menu.

RE: TILESET and BGs - Mario Inspired
Hello again!

I haven't visited this community in a while. In the past few months I could not continue the development of the game due to the lack of time. However, I got plenty of free time recently, so I became able to work on it again. I didn't want to show up again before I had something new to present. Now I have some stuff to show, so I'm posting here again.

First of all, your graphics are being very appreciated. Thank you very much! I've modified them a little bit, but they are essentially the same, as you can see on these screenshots:

[Image: scr1vr2.th.png] [Image: scr2tg9.th.png] [Image: scr5va9.th.png]

I'll post new pictures in the next few days if you're interested. The blue door on the first picture is actually locked, but the player will unlock it later in the game.

And you are right: the anger bar is for a special ability. My engine does not include shops to upgrade/buy items or that kind of stuff. Instead, the items and weapons will be found by the player during the game. There will be two worlds to play, and the user will be able to move from one world to another through an interdimensional corridor:

This picture may look kinda odd, but whenever you see the animation of this level, it will really look an interdimensional thing, full of energy waves and that kind of stuff.

Awesome dude. I'm glad to see there will be some words and text boxes in the game too to give it that rpg feel. I can tell in the last snap there is some warping going on. The doors are cool too. Thanks to your pal. They fit pretty good really. I'm looking forward to some more going on with the project you got going.. on.

I hope you don't stress out too much about your studis. iknow I did when I was at technical college. At least I finally got my degree.. But it seems useless at this point.. Grr. Don't stress yourself and hope to see some new things in the future.

Cheers bud. I thought you had left for good. Smile

Hey Vorpal,

I am the president and a Game Maker of a small (tiny) company called Sumdu Media. Anyway, I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate you doing this; and before this gets any more off topic, I am using some of these tiles in my game PhanticMoon: Crater. Can't wait to show em off.

Hello SMP. Is that for super Mario Person? Heh. Smile At any rate, i'm glad to see you have interest in designing games. When and if you get some work done with your game we could have a look see. Nevertheless, welcome to the community!

@Jackim
Well this isn't the appropriate thread for this but to give more detail about what you may want to see let me know on the Suggestions thread. Did you want a new default skin/theme? Or, did you just want some more themes to choose from? Let me know H E R E

Chow!
